Summary
Talented carpenter Robert Bradley leaves the Jarrow shipyards in 1913 for a better life in the country and a job in his uncle's furniture business. But he soon finds himself at odds with his God-fearing uncle, and his cousin Carrie is a teenage time bomb waiting to explode. For solace, he escapes to the grounds of a dilapidated country estate, where he meets the ethereal Millie Thorman, known locally as "The Moth." The girl's real name is Sarah Thorman, the daughter of his aristocratic employer, and before long Robert forms a scandalous attachment to her
